Common Iceland Layover Connections

Most people reading this did not choose Iceland. They chose a cheap or a short way across the Atlantic and Iceland came with it. That is worth understanding, because the shape of the connection you were sold decides the shape of the day you can have.

Why so many people change planes in Iceland

Geography, and one airline's use of it. Keflavik sits almost exactly between the eastern seaboard of North America and western Europe. That makes a one-stop crossing through Iceland competitive with a non-stop on time, and cheaper on price.

Icelandair has built its network on it. Flights arrive in waves, exchange passengers and leave again, and the airport handled 8,159,461 passengers in 2025. One consequence matters to you: a hub airline schedules connections to be short, not to be interesting.

The transatlantic bank, westbound

European flights land in the morning and the North American departures leave in the late morning and early afternoon. That produces the classic short connection: in at 07:00, out at 11:00, and no day at all.

The transatlantic bank, eastbound

North American flights land in the small hours and early morning, and the European departures leave through the middle of the day and into the afternoon. This is the direction that produces long, usable layovers — and the reason several departures here are built to start at the arrivals hall before nine in the morning.

It is also the direction with the worst jet lag. You land having half-slept across the Atlantic. A two-hour horse ride or a peninsula circuit does more for that than four hours in a seat by a gate.

Schengen and non-Schengen connections

Iceland is in the Schengen Area and not in the European Union, and the difference shows up at the door.

Schengen to Schengen — say Copenhagen to Iceland to Amsterdam — means no passport check either way. You are out of the building fastest on this combination.
Non-Schengen to Schengen, the usual North America or United Kingdom arrival, means border control on arrival. Allow up to 45 minutes at the peak of a bank.
Either way you re-enter as an ordinary departing passenger, through check-in and security, which is why the airport's 2.5-to-3-hour advice applies to you exactly as it applies to somebody starting their trip here.

The Icelandair Stopover, and when it beats a layover tour

Since the 1960s Icelandair has let transatlantic passengers stop in Iceland for up to seven days at no additional airfare. It is the same ticket, with a longer gap in the middle.

Over fourteen hours, take the Stopover instead. A night in a bed and a full day out will show you more than a night in a departure hall. At six to twelve hours a booked tour wins, because a hotel eats the time you were trying to use. Layovers of six hours or more covers where that line sits.

Cruise and ferry arrivals

Not every reader arrives by air. Several reviews on these listings come from passengers who had just come off a ship in Reykjavik. The products handle it the same way: a named pickup at the port, a route built around the sailing time, and a drop-off where you need to be.

The clock is the same problem in a different coat. A ship's all-aboard time is as unforgiving as a gate closure, and the honest margin is the same.

What a delayed inbound does to a booked tour

It shortens the tour, not your flight. The departures that meet you in the arrivals hall ask for your flight number and watch the arrival, so nobody leaves without you. What disappears is the last stop, not the whole day.
