Iceland Layover Tours Reviews
Feedback below comes from travellers who booked these tours, retold in our own words. The ratings and counts in the table are each operator's own published figures, shown exactly as they publish them.
Across the departures listed here the operators report 1,455 reviews between them, at ratings from 4.8 to 5.0. The spread is worth reading rather than the average: the highest-volume product is the cheapest one here, and the two mild criticisms in this set are about a saddle and a missing microphone rather than about the day.
Tours that start in the arrivals hall
The three departures that meet a flight rather than a hotel. Punctuality and a driver holding a name board are what travellers mention first.
We had a ten-hour layover and this turned it into the best part of the trip. The guide was knowledgeable, understood what our group could manage, and shaped the day around us rather than around a route sheet.

Private Reykjanes Peninsula Tour | Pick up from Keflavik International Airport
This may have been the best day of our two weeks. We had older relatives and children in the same group and he planned around both, and we still saw far more than we expected to.

Private Reykjanes Peninsula Tour | Pick up from Keflavik International Airport
A first hour in Iceland that set up everything after it. Agnes had an answer for the weather when it turned, and swapped in stops that worked instead of standing around in the wind.

Private Reykjanes Peninsula Tour | Pick up from Keflavik International Airport
Bjarni was standing in the arrivals hall at Keflavik as we came through. A short walk to the car and we were away, and the stops he had lined up showed off the coast properly rather than ticking it off.

Private South Coast Tour with Airport pick up
Thomas knows the peninsula and shares it in a way that makes the day fun rather than a list. The balance between the stops felt right and we were never standing around.

Golden Circle days
Collected from a Reykjavik address for the long loop. Here the comments are about pace and about running the circuit against the coach traffic.
A good run round the Golden Circle, and having it private made the difference — the guide was happy to be asked anything and even sorted out where we should eat that evening. One thing: without a microphone he was hard to hear from the back row of the van. Still a day we would book again.

Private Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik
Bjarni knew the countryside between the stops as well as he knew the stops themselves, which is not something you get on a coach. He had a story for most of the drive. We would ask for him again by name.

Private Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik
We came straight off a cruise ship and he was already waiting for us. The Golden Circle took the whole day at a pace that never felt rushed, and he took the photographs so both of us were in them.

Private Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik
Nothing about the day was on a timetable. He had worked out the order of the stops so we kept missing the coach traffic, and he built in a break for lunch and a washroom without being asked. You can stay longer somewhere or move on early.

Private Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik
We had done group trips in Iceland before and they all run to the same script. Having the car to ourselves meant we chose how long to spend at each stop and added one that was not on the plan. Worth the money.

Private Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik
Nine in the morning to four in the afternoon, and we saw everything we came for. Professional, friendly and full of information about what we were looking at.

Private Golden Circle Tour from Reykjavik
If you are in Reykjavik the Golden Circle is the day to give up, and a private guide is the way to see it. Josip replied to us by name afterwards, which tells you how the operation is run.

The south coast
Eight to ten hours and two hundred kilometres each way. Travellers who came off a cruise ship rather than a flight make up much of this set.
Siggy had the whole day planned when we came off the ship, and was relaxed about it when the younger ones were not up for a walk. Of everything we did in Iceland this was the one that told us most about living there.

Private Tour: South Coast of Iceland by SUV or Van from Reykjavik
Booking was straightforward and the company checked the pickup with us before we disembarked, which took the worry out of it. The guide gave us as much time as we wanted at each stop.

Private Tour: South Coast of Iceland by SUV or Van from Reykjavik
Seven of us, one car, and Jon looked after all of it. He knew the coast, he was patient with the children, and every stop was worth getting out for.

Horses and aurora nights
The two products that are not sightseeing drives, and between them they carry most of the reviews across these listings.
I ride and my husband and the boys barely have. The guided ride suited all four of us, and I peeled off with the faster group to try the tolt, which is worth doing at least once.

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour with Pickup Option from Reykjavik
We ranged from seven to seventy-three and most of us took the slow group, which worked. The saddles are not comfortable and everybody said so afterwards, whatever their age. The weather was kind and the guides were good company.

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour with Pickup Option from Reykjavik
Pickup to drop-off, everything was handled. The staff talked the nervous riders through it and let the confident ones out through the gates, which is a hard balance to strike with one group.

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour with Pickup Option from Reykjavik
Clear instruction before anyone got on, horses that all looked fit and well kept, and trail leaders who helped along the way. The landscape did the rest.

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour with Pickup Option from Reykjavik
Rainwear was there when we needed it, which in Iceland is most of the time. The horses were steady and the team could not have been more helpful.

Icelandic Horseback Riding Tour with Pickup Option from Reykjavik
Well organised from the moment we arrived, and the trails were in good condition. The staff went out of their way to make sure everyone was safe and enjoying it.

Matti Lis made the night. Kind, professional and genuinely good company, and he had hot chocolate waiting in the van when we came back in from the cold.

4 Hours Northern Lights Private Luxury Tour
The conditions were with us and the organisation matched them. We would thank Kel in particular for how the evening was run.

4 Hours Northern Lights Private Luxury Tour
Four hours out with a guide whose curiosity about the island came through in everything he said. Friendly, good company, and he knew the history as well as the geology.

What travellers consistently mention
The meeting point decides the day
Reviews that go well and reviews that go badly divide almost entirely on whether the driver was in the arrivals hall when the traveller came through. Give the operator your flight number rather than a terminal name; the flight number is what gets tracked.
Private means the order changes
The most-repeated praise on the Golden Circle days is not about the waterfalls. It is about a driver who runs the loop backwards to miss the coaches, or waits while somebody walks the far side of Kerid. That is the thing a fixed departure cannot do.
Ability groups make the horse ride work
Across more than a thousand reviews, the split into a slower and a faster group is the detail that comes up again and again — families with a seven-year-old and riders chasing the tolt both come away happy because they were never in the same line.
The clock is the constraint, not the country
Nobody complains about what they saw. The complaints are about starting late, and the answer is on the timing rules page: build the day around the 2.5-hour check-in advice rather than around the gate time.
Each operator's own ratings
