Iceland Layover Distances and Map
On a layover the map is a clock. Everything below is expressed as driving time from the terminal door rather than as distance, because minutes are the currency you are actually spending.
The one road that matters: Route 41
Route 41, the Reykjanesbraut, is the dual carriageway between Keflavik International Airport and Reykjavik. It runs 50 km across open lava, it is the best-maintained road in the country, and it is almost never the reason a plan fails.
Allow 45 to 50 minutes each way and treat the return leg as fifteen minutes longer than the outbound, because that is the leg carrying every stop that overran. Everything on these pages that starts with "an hour and a half of your window" is Route 41, twice.
Drive times from the terminal door
Approximate one-way times in good conditions, worked from published distances. Round trips are double, and the third column is the shortest connection in which the stop makes sense once the fixed costs are taken out.

The Reykjanes ring, Route 425
Route 425 loops the tip of the peninsula and links the Bridge Between Continents, the lighthouse at Valahnukur, Gunnuhver and Brimketill in one continuous run. Nothing on it is more than half an hour from the terminal, and the whole circuit is about 70 km.
This is the single most useful road on the site. It is why a five-hour connection here gets a real day out when the same connection at most European hubs gets you a motorway and a shopping street.
The Golden Circle loop
The loop is about 300 km from Reykjavik and adds the airport transfer at each end. From Keflavik you go out past the city on Route 41, north-east on Route 36 to Thingvellir, east to Geysir and Gullfoss, then back down through Kerid and Selfoss on Route 35 and Route 1.
It is a genuine circle, so nothing is driven twice, and that is the reason it works as a day at all. Nine hours of connection is the realistic floor.
Route 1 east, and where it stops making sense
Route 1, the Ring Road, runs east from Reykjavik along the south coast: Seljalandsfoss at 2 h 10 from the airport, Skogafoss at 2 h 30, Solheimajokull at 2 h 40, Reynisfjara and Vik at 2 h 50. It is a fine road and it is entirely straightforward to drive.
The problem is symmetry. Every kilometre out is a kilometre back, and a Vik day is close to six hours of driving. Past Vik — Jokulsarlon is roughly five hours from the airport — there is no layover left, only a drive.
What winter does to every figure above
Add about a third to the drive times between November and March, and be ready for the figure to become infinite. Vegagerdin publishes live road conditions at road.is and the Met Office issues warnings at vedur.is; a closure on Route 1 or the Golden Circle roads is a normal winter event rather than an emergency.
Route 41 is the exception and is cleared first, which is another argument for keeping a winter connection on the peninsula. What the season does to daylight, and therefore to what you can see at all, is on the weather and daylight page.
Reading the map before you book
Take your connection, subtract the fixed costs, halve what is left, and read down the one-way column until you run out. That is your radius, and it is usually smaller than you hoped and larger than you feared.
