Your seven hours around the Golden Circle
A driver collects you from your hotel lobby in Reykjavik and returns you to it, and between those two moments the whole Golden Circle happens at your pace rather than a coach's. Five stops, about forty-five minutes at each, and roughly three hours of driving threaded between them.
The vehicle is air-conditioned with Wi-Fi on board, and the fare has already paid the Kerid admission and the car parks at Thingvellir and Faxi. Nothing else is due on the day except lunch, which is not included.
What the private format buys is the order. The circuit can be run clockwise or anticlockwise, and a driver who runs it against the coaches puts you at Gullfoss when the car park is emptying rather than filling. That is the single most repeated observation in the reviews.

The five stops, and what each one is
Kerid, 45 minutes. A maar crater 55 m deep and 270 m across with an aquamarine lake at the bottom. You can walk the rim or the shore path. It is the one stop on the route that charges admission, at 700 ISK, and the fare has already covered it.
Faxi, 45 minutes. A broad, low waterfall on the Tungufljot with a salmon ladder beside it, and far fewer people than the two famous falls.
Geysir, 45 minutes. Geysir itself has been mostly dormant for years. Strokkur, next to it, erupts every five to ten minutes, so nobody waits long.
Gullfoss, 45 minutes. The Hvita drops 11 m and then 21 m into a crevice 2.5 km long, running at about 141 cubic metres a second in summer. Sigridur Tomasdottir's campaign to stop it being dammed is why it became a permanent conservation site in 1979.
Thingvellir National Park, 45 minutes. The rift valley where the Althing was founded in 930 and met until 1798, on the boundary between the North American and Eurasian plates. UNESCO inscribed it in 2004. Almannagja is the fault you walk down into.
What the fare covers, and what it does not
Included: private transport in an air-conditioned vehicle, Wi-Fi on board, the admission fee at Kerid, and the parking at Thingvellir and at Faxi.
Not included: lunch. There is a restaurant at Geysir and a cafe at Gullfoss, and at forty-five minutes a stop you eat where the timing suits rather than where you booked.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
Book this if
You have nine hours of connection or more, or a night in Reykjavik, and you want the loop everyone comes to Iceland for done at a human pace. It is the only per-person Golden Circle fare here, which makes it the sensible choice for one or two travellers. Book something else if
Your connection is under eight hours. Thingvellir alone is an hour and a quarter from the terminal, and the Reykjanes Peninsula gives you geothermal ground and coast without the distance — the four-to-five hour tour from the airport is the one that covers it. If you are four or more people, the per-group Golden Circle fare works out cheaper a head.
Where you meet the driver
Your guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Reykjavik. Give the operator the name of the hotel, apartment or port at booking, and confirm it in the message thread the day before.
This is a city pickup rather than an airport one, which is the thing to be clear about if you are arriving on the day: the drive from Keflavik International Airport to a Reykjavik address is 45 to 50 minutes, and it is on you, not the tour.
Know before you go
- Departure is in the morning. Travellers describe days running from about nine to about four, which is what a seven-hour tour looks like with a morning start.
- The vehicle is not wheelchair accessible. If that matters, the south-coast SUV day and the ten-hour Golden Circle eco tour both state step-free access.
- Lunch is not included. Eat at Geysir or Gullfoss, and tell the driver early so the stop lengths can absorb it.
- Only Kerid charges admission, and it is already paid. Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss are free to enter; what you pay at Thingvellir is parking.
- Dress for standing still in wind. Every stop is outdoors and the spray at Gullfoss reaches the viewing path.
